Safe Shelter

A safe care initiative for vulnerable children in Benin and Togo.

Safe Shelter is RefugeRoot’s pilot initiative to create a safe, stable, and caring environment for vulnerable children in Benin.

The project is currently being developed as a pilot safe care initiative in Akassato, in the Commune of Abomey-Calavi. The goal is to provide protection, daily care, emotional stability, and a family-centered path for children who need a safe place to grow.

At RefugeRoot, we believe that shelter is not only a building. A true shelter is a place where a child can feel seen, protected, guided, and loved.

Current field update

In June 2026, RefugeRoot submitted an official application to the Ministry of Family and Social Action in Benin to move forward with the Safe Shelter pilot. The planned pilot will support 20 children and will be developed with attention to safety, care standards, accessibility, and the guidance of local social services.

The project is being shaped carefully because children need more than emergency help. They need stability, trusted adults, daily routines, and a safe environment that respects their dignity.

Safe Shelter is a long-term commitment to protection, healing, and dignity.
