Supporting widows in Benin and Togo with training, dignity, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Mothers of Courage is RefugeRoot’s livelihood program for widows and vulnerable mothers.
The program begins with listening. Before offering solutions, RefugeRoot meets women in their own communities, hears their stories, understands their skills, and works with local partners to identify practical pathways toward income and dignity.
In Kpomassè, Benin, many of the women targeted by the pilot already have experience in farming or small community-based activities. What they need is not charity alone. They need training, tools, local support, and the opportunity to turn their experience into sustainable income.
Current field update
In June 2026, RefugeRoot met with widows in the Commune of Kpomassè as part of the preparation for the pilot. The goal is to support 20 widows through practical training and income-generating activities linked to agriculture and local livelihoods.
The Commune of Kpomassè is expected to support the initiative through local collaboration, including access to space and coordination with community actors.
Mothers of Courage is about helping women stand again with dignity, strength, and hope for their children.
