Why "Mothers of courage" ?
This project was born from a simple conviction: compassion must become action. Sacrificial love looks like in real povert, and opened our eyes to widows in Kpomassè who need practical support to protect their children’s future.
Our team in Benin repeatedly encountered widows raising children alone without stable income, often forced to choose between food, school fees, and basic care. Agossou Kanassohou’s life—marked by sacrifice, resilience, and compassion—made the need personal and clear, inspiring RefugeRoot to launch Mothers of Courage.

Mothers of Courage is RefugeRoot’s empowerment project in Kpomassè (Benin) designed to help widows rebuild stable income with dignity. We are targeting 100 widows who will first complete a practical entrepreneurship training (budgeting, simple bookkeeping, pricing, customer service, and choosing a small activity that fits their local market). After the training and a simple business plan, each participant receives $100 in start-up capital to launch a micro-business (ex.: small trading, food sales, basic services, or other locally viable activities).
- 100 micro-businesses launched by trained widows
- Improved household stability: better ability to cover food, school fees, and basic health needs
- Skills gained: budgeting, saving habits, simple records, and responsible reinvestment
- Greater dignity and confidence for widows through income independence
- Stronger child protection: reduced vulnerability by supporting caregivers with reliable resources
